My name is Cyd, my brand is Cydvolution. I’m a Graphic Designer, Photographer, Illustrator and Poet. I basically do everything.
How did you get into what you do creatively?
I’ve been drawing probably before I could even talk, so art has always come naturally. I started my Graphic Design career in high school after taking a class and went on to major in it in college. I took photography as an elective in college and fell in love with it, so I made it my minor and I’ve been shooting ever since. Illustration and poetry have just always been a part of my DNA.
What themes do you pursue in you work?
My work focuses on Blackness. All aspects of Blackness. I design for Black creatives from all walks of life. My work helps them express themselves and helps me express my love for my community. My work is an exploration of Blackness in all of its forms and functions
What memorable responses have you had to your work?
I’ve reached a variety of audiences and has allowed me to meet, collaborate with, and receive praise from some amazing individuals like Tobe Nwigwe, Jidenna, Janelle Monáe, Masego, Roman Gianarthur, Kellindo Parker, so many other talented creatives on social media and so of my other favorite artists. Any feedback that inspires someone to create is a memorable response for me.
What/who influences you?
My biggest influences come from fellow Black creatives that have paved the way for future Balck creatives. Prince, Basquiat, Grace Jones, Janelle Monáe, Nikki Giovanni, Michael Jackson, are among a few that constantly push me forward to create through their own artistry. Life itself is a huge influence on me as well because it’s a brilliant idea.
What makes your work necessary (to you, to others, to the community)?
I have to tell the stories, our stories, for those who don’t know how. I give others the opportunity to see their visions come to life. I manifest their ideas into realities and communicate the concepts they can only imagine. I’m a vessel. It’s necessary that I use my talents to help others because that’s my life’s purpose and without fulfilling my life’s purpose I wouldn’t be able to fill the void. I have to fill the void.
